Will is The Regional Press Photographer of The Year!

Having been thrilled to be shortlisted in this year's Society of Editors' Regional Press Awards for The Daily Photographer of The Year, it's hard to put into words how I'm feeling after winning it! I am still on a high. I went down to London on Friday with colleagues from The Leicester Mercury for a day at The Lancaster London Hotel and I genuinely didn't expect to win. I know that's probably what a lot of award winners say, but especially with some of the other images on the shortlist, I really was just pleased to be in attendance. I was up against some fantastic photographers and some stunning images and even though I was very happy with mine, I still felt honoured to simply have my work showcased alongside theirs.
It was great to speak to fellow journalists and meet people from other papers as well as enjoy a great event and the lovely food and drink! I then suddenly got a bit nervous at the moment when the brilliant host Nick Ferrari (pictured) announced that the photography awards were next. When he started describing some of my work I was so so pleased and a little overwhelmed! Reflecting upon the judges comments who focused in particular upon my funeral image, he said I'd "produced an incredibly moving photograph that perfectly captured the tragedy of a parent’s death." I've had many lovely messages, tweets and texts from a lot of people and I'd like to thank you all for your support, it means a lot.

I think this is going to take a while to sink in!
Cheers, Will
